Ampersands are very unusual symbols in the written word. I was intrigued about how and why they came about. This infographic is a timeline of the Ampersand's long history, and the evolution of its unusual appearance.
I am drawn into the ampersand by its elegant curves. It can differ in looks depending on the typeface used, but the Baskerville ampersand I designed with has a very classical appearance. The large ampersand in the poster beautifully breaks up the negative space into unusual shapes that is balanced well with the right side. The timeline is nestled under the ampersand's swash, which gives it a nice flowing appearance.
This infographic could be used in textbooks about the history of certain ligatures, but it was made with the artistic intention of being hung on the wall.
